Deck Resurfacing: Semi-Solid Stain on Pressure Treat
This pressure treat deck stain was completed in early summer 2017. This is a semi-solid stain finished on 10-year-old pressure treated deck and pergola. The deck surface and pergolas had never been stained before. The semi-solid stain allows for a more full-bodied colour visual, while still having the wood grain and texture partially visible through the stain.
Clients’ Wishes
This large deck wraps around the façade of the house, with another smaller deck on the west side of the home. There is a pergola accompanying each deck. The client wanted to have both the porch/deck surfaces stained, as well as the pergolas. The goal was to choose a colour concept slightly different from the homes siding colour to create a modern appearance to the exterior of the home.
What We Did
You can see in the images that the deck surfaces had never been stained. With years of dirt and wear built up, although never previously stained, we spent an absurd amount of man hours sanding and stripping the wood surfaces completely. We strip the deck surfaces and pergolas down to fresh wood. This “new” wood has now had its pours opened up, allowing us to brush the stain. Where the aluminum posts and railing systems are in place, we are unable to disassemble as usually done. These areas where sanders can’t reach MUST be hand scraped and sanded manually. Stain must be brushed on in order to apply the right amount necessary and leave the best finish possible. This process will allow 5-10 years before any maintenance is required. Maintenance coats do not require re-sanding.
